This course aims to provide basic working knowledge and some practical experience of electrical installation in single phase and 3 phase.
Course Content/topics covered
Part 1 Course Content: PE02/033 - Wiring & Testing
• Safety Procedures, including:
- The requirements for isolation
- Procedures
- Checking
- Using test lamps
- Various test meters
- Clamp on ammeter
• Single Phase:
- Working to simple electrical drawings
- Identifying and selecting cables and wires
- Practice in terminating and connecting cables
- Lighting circuits, 1-way, 2-way and intermediate
- Ring circuit and spur
- Instruct in the testing of the ring circuit to BS7671
• Course review and evaluation
Part 2 Course Content: PE02/037 - Maintenance
• Three phase:
- Clamp on ammeter
- Testing motors
- Resistance of phases
- Insulation between phases
- Insulation to earth (Health & Safety as above) Wiring and connecting starter and motors
- Removal of fuses, awareness of locking off and permits to work
- Wire simple starter
- Wire direct on starter and motor
- Wire star delta starter and motor
• Check starter and running currents of the above instar or delta (Health & Safety under close supervision of Alliance Instructor), subject to delegates ability (assessed by Alliance Instructor), a selection from:
- Develop circuit diagram and wire 3 starters and motors to run in sequence
- Wire crane control panel, 3 motors and check using test instruments
- Wire motors highlighting starting currents and running currents
- Follow simple schematic drawings, wiring motor and control gear

Assessment and Certification

Hydraulics & Pneumatics – Alliance Learning Certified

Course Overview (Benefits)
This course is designed to equip the Mechanical/Electrical fitter or maintenance person with a basic working knowledge and practical experience of combined Hydraulics and Pneumatics.
Course Content/topics covered
This course covers:
- Safety Procedures
- Introduction to CETOP (BS2917) symbols
- Hydraulic/Pneumatic circuits
- Testing of circuits
- Instruction in basic fault finding and maintenance

Mechanical Maintenance
Mechanical Maintenance – Alliance Learning Certified

Course Overview (Benefits)
This course aims to provide basic working knowledge and practical experience in basic mechanical/fitting skills.
Course Content/topics covered
This course covers:
- Measuring/marking out to include datums/guidelines, angles etc.
- Bench fitting: Safely using - drilling machine, pedestal grinder, Power-Saw
- Filing surfaces - flat and square, curved and angular
- Removing surplus materials - sawing, chiselling and shaping
- Producing holes to include - drilling, reaming, countersinking
- Drill grinding, key fitting, pulley and shaft alignment
- Drive belts, holding devices, bearings (fitting and extraction)

Level 2 Award in Welding
Level 2 Award in Welding City & Guilds Certified

Course Overview (Benefits)
Our Level 2 welding courses are aimed at anyone already working in the industry who wants to develop their welding skills further and advance their career.
Course Content/topics covered
This course is a highly practical course, delivered in our dedicated Fabrication and Welding building. The course content includes the under-pinning knowledge of welding techniques and also covers health and safety. Candidates can study one of the following units:
- Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding
- Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding
- Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding
All sessions are practical workshop sessions, although a small amount of reading and research is expected in order to answer the oral questions at the end of the course. Support materials are available..
Course Duration
3 hours per week for 17 weeks, 6pm-9pm.
Target Group
Our Level 2 welding courses are aimed at anyone already working in the industry who wants to develop their welding skills further and advance their career.
Assessment and Certification
To successfully pass the course, five practical assignments consisting of welding points in standard horizontal in the PB and PF positions and one oral knowledge test, for each unit studied, must be passed, with successful completion evidencing an individual’s competence in their chosen welding process. Successful delegates will receive a City & Guilds certificate.

Course Requirements
This course is suitable for those who have already achieved Level 1 in the welding process and wish to study at Level 2. It is a requirement that all candidates provide PPE.
